Biosoluble Packing

Bio Soluble Rope Packing

  • Manufactured from special alkaline earth silicate yarns which are bio soluble (body soluble / low bio persistence) and were developed as a direct replacement for harmful asbestos and refractory ceramic fibre products.
  • Bio soluble yarns are rated to 1000°C in optimum conditions.
  • Bio soluble packings are reinforced with glass (550°C) or metal wire (1000°C) and they contain approximately 20% organic fibre which burns off at low temperatures.
  • Bio soluble packings are available in three different constructions each with their own unique characteristics as explained below.

Applications

  • Webbing / Ladder Door Seals for Furnaces / Kilns / Industrial Boilers.
  • Exhaust / Hot Pipe Insulation.
  • Stress Relieving (Welding / Heat Treatment).

Enhancements

Textile Technologies can further enhance the above loomstate ladders as follows:
Dry Graphite Dispersion
Apply a dry black graphite dispersion to improve abrasion resistance and aesthetics.
Apply a wet black graphite dispersion to improve sealing qualities and resistance to hot gases.
Apply a vermiculite dispersion to improve abrasion resistance and increase its temperature resistance up to 1000°C.

Rope Packings can be covered with a metal outer braid of galvanised steel, stainless steel or Inconel.  This creates an extremely robust, abrasion resistant uniform seal.

FAQs

Who is the UK’s Market leading stockist of Bio Soluble Packing (AES)?

Textile Technologies Europe Ltd

  1. Standardpackings are produced by braiding bio soluble fibre yarn over a compact core of bio soluble fibre yarns. They are compact, firm and flexible with high mechanical resistance and excellent static sealing properties.
  2. Soft corepackings are produced by braiding bio soluble fibre yarns around a central core of bio soluble fibre insulation. Soft core packings are less dense, lighter in weight but more flexible than standard or brick solid packings. They have high thermal insulation capacity and excellent static sealing properties.
  3. Brick solidpackings are produced by the “Braid-over-Braid” method where bio soluble fibre yarns are heavy braided over a very compact core of braided bio soluble yarns. Brick solid packings are a total braided construction and are therefore exceptionally compact, brick solid in density and maintain superior mechanical resistance under pressure, compression and abrasion.
*Standard packings account for 90% of all packings produced, therefore if the construction type is not known, it is standard construction which we will quote for.

What is Bio Soluble Packing?

Biosoluble packing refers to high-performance bio soluble packings manufactured from advanced alkaline earth silicate fibres designed for demanding industrial environments.

These specialist sealing and insulation materials were developed as a safer direct replacement for harmful asbestos and certain refractory ceramic fibre products historically used in high temperature applications.

The fibres used in bio soluble packings are classified as body soluble, meaning they dissolve more rapidly in the human body compared with traditional ceramic fibre materials.

This reduced bio persistence significantly lowers the long-term health risk associated with airborne fibre exposure, making bio soluble textiles an important advancement in modern technical textiles and fire protection solutions.

Because of their specialised composition, bio soluble packings provide excellent thermal insulation and reliable thermal resistance in applications where strong thermal insulation and mechanical durability are required. The fibres also exhibit low thermal conductivity, which allows them to maintain stable thermal performance even in challenging industrial process conditions.

Materials and Composition

Modern bio soluble packings are produced using carefully engineered bio soluble yarns manufactured from alkaline earth silicate fibres containing key elements such as calcium and magnesium. These materials are part of a new generation of bio soluble refractory insulation materials designed to replace older refractory ceramic fibre products.

The composition of bio soluble fibres allows them to deliver high temperature resistance while remaining body soluble. This combination of safety and performance makes bio soluble packings widely used across many industrial sectors including furnace sealing, boilers, and process insulation.

During manufacture, bio soluble yarns are braided to form dense packings with controlled density, weight, and mechanical resistance. Depending on the intended industrial application, the packings can also be reinforced using either glass fibres or metal wire such as galvanised steel. These wire reinforced or glass reinforced designs increase the mechanical strength and compression resistance of the finished packings.

Performance in High Temperature Applications

One of the main advantages of bio soluble packings is their excellent performance in high temperature applications where strong thermal insulation and structural durability are essential.

When exposed to elevated thermal conditions, the fibres maintain strong thermal resistance and structural stability under optimum conditions. The bio soluble fibres also demonstrate strong resistance to moisture, oxidation, and mechanical wear in demanding industrial environments.

Many bio soluble packings contain a small percentage of organic fibre which burns away during initial heating. This process occurs at low temperatures and creates a stable insulating structure that enhances the overall thermal insulation performance of the packings.

Because of their low thermal conductivity and high thermal resistance, bio soluble packings are widely used for insulation, sealing, and fire protection in heavy industrial process equipment.

Construction Types and Reinforcement Options

To meet the requirements of different industrial installations, bio soluble packings are available in three different constructions, each with their own unique characteristics.

These packings may be produced in round, square, or rectangular profiles depending on the sealing construction required. The round profile is commonly used for door seals on boilers, furnaces, and kilns, while square and rectangular profiles are often used in gasket and expansion joint insulation systems.

Standard Construction

Standard bio soluble packings are braided using bio soluble yarns around a dense internal core. This construction provides a flexible, compact sealing material with excellent compression properties and reliable thermal insulation performance.

Soft Core Construction

Soft core bio soluble packings are designed with a lower density core which increases flexibility and insulation performance. These packings are suitable for applications where greater adaptability and easier installation are required around curved surfaces or irregular door openings.

Brick Solid Construction

Brick solid bio soluble packings are heavily braided using multiple layers of bio soluble yarns to produce extremely dense packings with superior compression resistance. These heavy-duty packings are commonly used in high pressure industrial sealing environments.

Reinforced Bio Soluble Packings

For applications requiring greater mechanical durability, bio soluble packings can be reinforced with either glass fibres or metal wire.

Wire reinforced bio soluble packings use metal wire such as galvanised steel to strengthen the braided structure. These wire reinforced designs provide improved abrasion resistance, greater compression stability, and enhanced durability in demanding industrial sealing applications.

Alternatively, glass reinforced bio soluble packings incorporate high temperature glass filaments or fibreglass strands within the braided structure. These glass reinforced packings maintain strong thermal insulation properties while providing improved mechanical resistance.

Both wire reinforced and glass-reinforced bio-soluble packings are widely used for sealing boilers, furnaces, and high temperature process equipment.

Industrial Applications

range of industrial insulation and sealing applications.

Typical uses include:

  • Furnace and kiln door sealing systems
  • Sealing solutions for industrial boilers
  • Pipe and duct insulation systems
  • Heat treatment equipment sealing
  • Fire protection and thermal barrier systems

In many cases these packings are covered with protective coatings or graphite dispersions to enhance abrasion resistance and extend service life in harsh industrial environments.
